The key to surviving psychotherapist residency? Becoming a sponge.

During my psychotherapist training, I battled imposter syndrome, intense patient stories, and harsh feedback. Going to work in the mornings became a struggle. But embracing the sponge mentality changed everything: I thrived, learning more than most.

In this article, I will guide you through what becoming a sponge actually means and how you too can adapt that mindset to conquer tough times.

Becoming a sponge means soaking it all up: the struggle, the criticism and the praise

Right after university, my idealistic ‘save the world’ mindset faced a brutal reality check.

In that challenging period, I sought ways to cope better. One coping mechanism that came to mind was to use all the struggles as learning opportunities. That’s what Adam Grant calls ‘becoming a sponge’ in his latest book, ‘Hidden Potential’. Without realizing it was an established concept, I intuitively started embracing it. I made a personal pledge to embrace every piece of feedback as an opportunity for growth. Thus, the sponge mentality was born.

By becoming a sponge and viewing feedback and struggle as learning opportunities, I distanced myself from it and gained clarity on areas needing improvement.

Squeeze the sponge: making learning fun

After realizing the power of being a sponge, I focused on using my new knowledge.

I documented everything in a notebook, asked lots of questions, and faced my fears by seeking feedback. This amplified my learning and helped me further detach from negativity. As I became accustomed to this process, I found it easier to embrace challenging situations, ensuring to highlight the lessons learned from each.

Consequently, my training became markedly smoother as I witnessed tangible improvements in my skill set with each passing day and every difficult situation.

Being a sponge is a great example of having a growth mindset.

Having a growth mindset is a big deal for success.

Individuals with a growth mindset believe they can achieve great things by learning new things. So, to be a sponge means you’re all about growing, being open to new experiences, learning new things, and picking up new skills. Having this mindset helps you adapt when things get tough, so you can still reach your goals.

Especially if you doubt yourself, seeing tough times as chances to learn more about yourself can be very helpful.

Developing your growth mindset by embracing the sponge approach is a valuable skill. It will guide you through tough situations and make you smarter and stronger in the end.

If you’re having trouble with this or need support in nurturing your growth mindset, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance.
