Eva-Maria Merboth
Licensed Psychologist & Psychotherapist · Germany
I work with people who are trying to understand what's happening - and find a way forward. Whether that's an expat navigating life abroad, a couple finding their way back to each other, or someone who knows something needs to change but can't quite name it yet.

Why I do this work
I grew up in a small town, but with a deep curiosity about people, cultures, and the wider world. What drew me to psychology was the same thing that drew me to travel: wanting to understand how people work - why we feel what we feel, what shapes us, and how we find our way through difficult times. That curiosity took me to the Netherlands to study psychology, then to a semester in Japan, and eventually to building a practice that works with people from all over the world.
I became a psychologist because I was interested in the same question my clients bring: why do we do what we do, even when we know better?
For over 10 years I worked in clinical settings across Germany - a psychotraumatology centre, a psychosomatic clinic, and a day hospital where I led a team of ten psychologists. That clinical depth informs everything I do.
Since 2022 I've focused on online counselling, working with expats, international professionals, and couples from all over the world. The work is always the same: understanding what's underneath the surface, and finding a way through.
My approach
I draw on several evidence-based methods, combined according to what each person or couple actually needs.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
For couples, EFT helps partners understand the emotional cycles driving conflict - and find their way back to genuine connection. It has one of the strongest evidence bases in couples work.
Depth Psychology
Understanding the patterns beneath our conscious choices - the stories we tell ourselves, the defences we've built, the needs we haven't been able to name yet.
Trauma-Informed Work & EMDR
For those carrying difficult past experiences, I use trauma-focused methods including EMDR and imaginative techniques, adapted sensitively for online delivery.
Emotion Regulation
Learning to recognise and work with your emotions - rather than being overwhelmed by them or shutting them out. Drawing on DBT and psychoeducational methods.
