What Is Online Psychological Counselling? A Beginner's Guide

If you’ve been curious about therapy or counselling but unsure where to start, you’re not alone. Online psychological counselling has become increasingly accessible, yet many people still aren’t sure exactly what it involves or how it differs from traditional face-to-face therapy.

This guide covers the basics: what online counselling is, what to expect, and how to know if it might be right for you.

What Is Online Counselling?

Online psychological counselling is professional psychological support delivered through video calls, rather than in-person meetings. You speak with a qualified psychologist or counsellor from the comfort of your own home (or wherever you feel comfortable).

The content of the sessions is the same as in-person counselling: you talk about what’s on your mind, explore patterns in your thinking and behaviour, develop coping strategies, and work towards the goals you set together.

What Happens in a Session?

A typical session lasts 50 minutes. In the first session, your counsellor will want to understand what brought you to counselling: what’s been difficult, what you’re hoping to change, and a bit about your background.

From there, sessions are guided by your goals. Some people come with a specific issue (anxiety at work, a relationship difficulty). Others come because something feels “off” but they can’t quite name it. Both are completely valid starting points.

Is Online Counselling as Effective as In-Person?

Research consistently shows that online counselling is equally effective as in-person therapy for most issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and life transitions.

Some people actually find it easier to open up in a familiar environment. There’s also no travel time, making it simpler to fit into a busy week.

Who Is It For?

Online counselling is a good fit if you:

  • Are dealing with anxiety, stress, low mood, or relationship challenges
  • Want a space to understand yourself better
  • Have a busy schedule and value flexibility
  • Live somewhere without easy access to in-person therapists
  • Simply prefer the comfort of talking from home

How Do You Get Started?

The best first step is a short introductory call. No commitment, just a chance to ask questions and see if it feels right. Most counsellors, including myself, offer a free intake session for exactly this purpose.

If you’re curious, feel free to book a free 25-minute intake session. There’s no pressure, and you’re free to decide afterwards whether you’d like to continue.
